How the town began

The City of Coralville says its development began after the construction, in 1843, of what was then the largest dam in Iowa, built on the Iowa River, and the mills that used its power. The town was christened Coralville in 1866, shortly after Louis Agassiz, a Harvard zoologist, spoke at the University of Iowa about coral reefs and was impressed by samples of fossilized coral in the limestone around the mills. By its incorporation in 1873, the city says, Coralville's population had grown to almost 300 (City of Coralville, Coralville History, as of 2026). The city adds that a newer dam, authorized by Congress in 1938 and completed in 1958 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, stands four miles upstream.

What stands out

The town that began at an 1843 mill dam now has a mostly recent housing stock: the median year built is 1995, and about 72 percent of homes date from 1980 or later. Multi-unit buildings outnumber detached houses, with about 47 percent of units in buildings of two or more, against 37 percent single-family homes standing alone. The renter share is the second highest of the eleven, after Iowa City's. Enrollment in college or graduate school is about 10 percent of residents aged 3 and over, well below Iowa City's 34 percent, which is measured the same way.
